About Migration Island

Welcome to Migration Island

As an expert in migration related issues, Dr. Katia Amore has worked for over ten years within the NGO sector and academia on projects related to immigration, asylum, community cohesion, ethnic relations, etc. focusing mostly on the Euro-Mediterranean area. Born in Sicily, lived in Venice, then moved to the UK, married to a Cypriot, now back in Sicily, her experience of “the island” is that of a meeting place where the busy encounter of civilizations offers both occasions for hope and despair.

More so, in the migration context, “island” is the safe oasis during a long-difficult journey towards the final destination, the door to peace and prosperity, the hope for a better future, but far too often can also mean isolation, discrimination, exclusion.

For the first year, Migration Island was Dr Amore personal blog, her space for thoughts. Since 2006, thanks to the encouragment of fellow researchers, friends and colleagues, Migration Island has taken new directions, beginning the journey towards becoming a research and resource centre dedicated to the study of islands and migration. A contribution to a new generation of island migration studies which looks specifically at: The Maltese Islands, Cyprus, Sicily, Lampedusa and The Canary Islands.

There are currently three members of staff. Dr. Katia Amore, Director; Dott.ssa Stefania Barone, Legal expert; Dott.ssa Carla Gieri, Administrator.
